The cross in 8 moves

Goal: The white cross on the bottom, in few moves and without looking at the top.

Hold your cube like the one on screen (yellow on top) and repeat the moves of each case.

Use the cube on the page: watch the cases, then practice. Turn layers by dragging a piece or with the keyboard (U D R L F B and M, Shift = prime). Rw is R + M'.

Any cross can be solved in 8 moves or fewer. Speedcubers build it straight on the bottom (no daisy) and plan the whole thing during the 15 seconds of inspection.

Key ideas

  1. Think of the edges relative to each other, not to the centers: if white-blue and white-red are placed correctly relative to each other, a single D turn fixes both.
  2. Use D to bring an edge's slot right under it before bringing it down.
  3. Start with the easiest one and leave the one that needs the most moves for last.
  4. Don't rotate the cube while building the cross: it wastes time and you lose track.

Practice on the cube on the page: when you finish we'll tell you how many moves you used and how many the shortest cross had.

To train inspection with your own cube, scramble with the timer, plan the cross without moving anything, then do it with your eyes closed.

Got it?When you can do it on your cube, mark it to track your progress.

Practice on the cube: when you succeed, the lesson will be marked as done.
