How to solve your Rubik's cube with Kubixel
- Hold your cube with yellow on top and blue in front. Those are the centers shown by the cube on screen.
- Enter the colors. Pick a color and tap the stickers on the 3D cube or on the 6-face net, or press Scan and show the faces to your camera: the order and rotation don't matter, the real cube is worked out when you finish.
- Choose how to solve it and press Solve.
- Follow the moves on the 3D cube: step by step, backwards or jumping to any move.
The shortest solution
It uses Kociemba's two-phase algorithm, the one behind the best-known solvers: in about a second it finds solutions of around 20 moves at most, and if your cube is one turn away from solved, it gives you that turn. No 3x3 position needs more than 20 moves: that's the so-called "God's number".
Step by step to learn
It solves the cube with the beginner (layer-by-layer) method, the same one taught in the academy. It's more moves, but grouped into steps (the white cross, the corners, the second layer...) and each step links to its lesson.
If it says your cube can't be solved
Kubixel checks that the colors make a real cube and tells you what's wrong: missing stickers or too many of a color, a corner or edge that doesn't exist, or a twisted corner, a flipped edge or two swapped pieces. It's almost always a wrong color; check the marked pieces. If every color is right, someone has taken apart or twisted a piece of the real cube, and then it can't be solved with normal turns.
Frequently asked questions
Is it free?
Yes, the solver is free and you don't need an account.
Is the camera image sent anywhere?
No. The scanner and the solver run in your own browser: the camera image never leaves your device.
Does it work for a 4x4 or other cubes?
For now the solver is for the 3x3. For big cubes there's the Swap tab, which works out algorithms to move pieces on cubes up to 7x7.
How many moves is the solution?
The shortest is usually 18 to 21 moves. The beginner method one is about 100-160, since it goes piece by piece.
The scanner mixes up red and orange
They're the most similar colors. Scan in good light without glare; if one comes out wrong, you can fix it by painting before solving.
